Southeastern Province
The Columbia (SC) Alumni Chapter is one chapter within the Southeastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity, Inc. — a provincial body established in 1926 that today reaches from the Midlands of South Carolina across Georgia and on to South Africa, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates.

The Southeastern Province
The Southeastern Province was among the first provinces established in Kappa Alpha Psi®. Its history dates to 1926, when Devear P. Young of the Atlanta (GA) Alumni Chapter — a 1921 charter initiate of the Omicron Chapter — became the first Province Polemarch. Before 1924 the provinces were known simply as Regions One through Seven.
The province as we know it today was formed in 1951. Until then it stretched along the eastern seaboard from North Carolina to Florida, taking in Georgia and Alabama, and was the most extensive province in Kappadom. At the 40th Grand Chapter in Kansas City in December 1950, the Grand Board of Directors recommended it be partitioned. South Carolina and Georgia kept the Southeastern name; Alabama and Florida became the Gulf Province, renamed the Southern Province before its first meeting that October.
Brian C. Mock of the Conyers–Covington (GA) Alumni Chapter has served as the 27th Southeastern Province Polemarch since 2021. A native of Cuthbert, Georgia, he was initiated through the Delta Xi Chapter at Albany State University.
Our Place in the Province
Columbia has been part of the province’s story since the years just after the Second World War. When provincial activity was revived, the Southeastern Province met in Birmingham in 1947 and in Columbia, South Carolina in 1948 — one of the meetings that brought the province back to life after a wartime pause in council gatherings.
In the decades since, three brothers of the Columbia (SC) Alumni Chapter have been elected to lead the entire province as Southeastern Province Polemarch.

The chapter continues to be recognized at the provincial level. It received the J. Michael Graves Chapter of the Year Award as a Large Chapter in 2024 and again in 2025, and at the Province’s centennial council in 2026 became the inaugural recipient of the Extra-Large Chapter of the Year Award.
