On November 18, 1947, six students Emmet D. Clark, Gilbert B. Ellerbe, Jr., Phillip Albert McPhail, Eldridge Sellers, Jr., Leslye S. Stallworth, Robert R. Webb and one professor Dr. W.E. Johnson all of Benedict College petitioned the Grand Board of Directors to create an expansion chapter on the campus of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.
On February 25, 1949 Benedict College was granted a charter bearing the name the Gamma Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The official charter members are as follows:

Ernest Wright, Keeper of Records
Phillip Albert McPhail, Keeper of Exchequer
Robert R. Webb, Dean of Pledges
Reverend James T. McCray, Historian

Archibald G. Bacoats, Jr., Charter Member
Jerry C. Smith, Charter Member
Alonzo Spencer, Charter Member
Otis A. Outen, Charter Member

The Charter members of the Gamma Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. were very active on the campus and the local community. Charter member Leslye S. Stallworth served as defensive end for the Benedict College football team and Charter member Robert R. Webb served as an offensive end for the Benedict College football team as well as a member of the Benedict College basketball and track teams. Subsequent to graduating from Benedict College, the Charter members pursued various careers that included but are not limited to the following: Charter members Gilbert B. Ellerbe, Jr., Robert R. Webb, Phillip A McPhail, Ernest Wright, and George Wideman, Jr. served as public school teachers and public school administrators until retirement. In addition, Charter member Robert R. Webb later pursued a career with MID and Charter member Ernest Wright worked as a photographer, writer, and business entrepreneur.
Since its inception the Gamma Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. continues its quest in achievement and community service. This is demonstrated by the level of excellence the Charter Members, Alumni Brothers, and current collegiate brothers exude. The Gamma Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has and continues to participate in a wide variety of community service projects and activities with the Metropolitan Columbia Area. They include but are not limited to the following: The Columbia Police Department K-A-Bond After School Program, the Carver Elementary School Mentoring Program, the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Mentoring Program, Family Connections of South Carolina, the South Carolina Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.), and most recently with the C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy High School Mentoring Young Men Program. All of the aforementioned projects are segments of our Fraternity’s Guide Right program.
